Meldon Reservoir, Okehampton

Plans to create Meldon reservoir were started around 1962. It wasn’t until 1970 that construction work started despite many attemps to block it. The construction was completed in 1972. The reservoir was created by damming the West Okement River. The reservoir is about 3/4 mile long, 1000 ft wide and approx. 130ft deep in places.

Perfect escape to the Country

This weekend Moorparks Holiday cottages was featured in an article in the Mail on Sunday. Gloria, one of our Swiss Valais sheep even had her pictured published. So, that was a nice surprise. We were asked the same day for a few pictures for an online article, Fab! You can see the online article here:

A farm stay in Devon, UK

A farm stay in Devon, UK A farm stay in Devon is becoming a more popluar choice. What better way to relax and unwind than to stay in the Devon countryside on a Farm within a picturesque rural setting. Wake up to the sounds of chickens, ducks and of course the sheep and goats bleating.

It was lovely to see that Moorparks Holiday Cottages got a bit of a write up and mention in a article recently (Farm stays are having a moment in the UK: here’s 7 you can check out).We must be doing something right. 😊 You can see the full article ‘Here’

Devon Life Magazine and the duck house

Devon Life magazine contacted us after our recent 5 minutes of fame on BBC Radio Devon. The Indian Runner ducks (and the chickens) are Michele’s, so she really should have been in the picture not me. I like them but the alpacas and sheep are more my thing. As Michele prefers being in ‘the background’

North Devon Hawk Walk

Last year we visited the stand of Nigel from North Devon Hawk Walk at a local show. When someone is standing around holding a Harris Hawk you just have to go and have a look. Michele got to hold the hawk and, she was pretty excited. Luckily for us we had a visit from our

RHS Rosemoor Torrington

RHS Rosemoor Torrington, it’s only a 5 minute drive down the road from Moorparks. As members, it’s nice to pop in for a short while just to see what is different. During the summer holidays we don’t usually get much of a change to visit, but last week we had some spare time so went

Horse riding on Dartmoor

Riding on Dartmoor A busy few days here at Moorparks. The Hawk Walk yesterday, then horse riding on Dartmoor and a trip to Dingles will finish the week. Some guests who were visiting us recently asked me where they could go horse riding in the countryside. After many phone calls I found Cholwell Riding Stables

Torrington Mayflower Bonfire 2021

Torrington Mayflower bonfire will be the result of 5 years planning and hard work. Towards the end of the 12th century a ‘large waste called The Common’, now Torrington Commons, was given to the people of Torrington. In 1889 the rights to this land were transferred, by an act of parliament, to an elected Committee

Westward Ho!

Westward Ho! beach is a favourite of ours. The Summer months in Devon and Cornwall can get very busy. The population expands to four times as many so everywhere is that little but busier. We don’t go to the beach during the ‘School holidays’ but always make the most of being so close at other

Watersmeet House, National Trust

Watersmeet House is a Nation Trust property set next to a stunning river gorge and amongst ancient woodlands. We decided (well, Michele decided for us 😟) to walk from Lynmouth to Watersmeet. The gorge runs directly from Lynmouth and the walk follows the river banks for most of the way. There are a couple of

Sheepdog display

The Sheepdog display at Borough Farm is a Farmyard show in Woolacombe. We spent yesterday evening there with friends, Cathy and Stuart. The journey up, along the coast, is a great drive with so much to see. This was the last show of the year but is usually on every Wednesday evening from May to

Walking on Dartmoor

A Dartmoor Walk Michele’s job as a nurse has her travelling around Devon and Cornwall. During the summer months there are some amazing views as there are so many hills around. Dartmoor is a regular route for Michele, but although she drives through it, she doesn’t get much of a chance to see it in
