Go Segway Exeter

We had our eldest son Scott and his girlfriend Kayleigh with us for a few days. We thought we would try something a little different, so Michele got searching. She found Go Segway Exeter, who are based in Halden forest which is about 40 miles from the cottages. It was one of the last days of the summer holidays and Halden forrest was quite busy with walkers, cylists and a few horses too. Everyone was making the most of a lovely sunny day.
I had seen a segway on TV, but not really paid much attention to it. So, what is it ?
The Segway is a two-wheeled electric vehicle. It was supposed to be a convenient way to travel around towns and cities. It is a self-balancing device and its name is derived from the word “segue” which literally means “follows”. The motorised scooter uses gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction in which the rider leans. Riders lean backwards, forwards and to the left and right using a thin handlebar attached to a pole. The Segway has a top speed of around 12.5 mph.

Someone looks excited !

We arrived 15 minutes early, as advised, to get our saftey equipment on….a helmet and prayer. We completed all of the paperwork and then went for our lesson on how to work a Segway. The group, 4 of us and 5 others, probably had about 45 minutes of learning how to control the Segway finishing off with the emergency stop proceedure.

Go Segway Exeter, amazing scenery

When everyone had completed the lessons and quick assessment we started off around the forrest. Although it was quite a busy day the forrest is very big, so we didn’t really have any traffic jams whilst ‘zooming’ around. It didn’t take too long before feeling slightly more comfortable and able to look at the stunning scenery around you. Obviously, still in Devon, so not a flat course but that did make it a little more interesting. I think we were out for about an hour but as usual it didn’t seem long at all….time flies when your having fun.

Great fun for all

I can safely say, from the smiles, that everyone had fun and enjoyed the experience. The instruction and instructors were great, the forrest is a lovely place to visit and I know that we will be back for either another try on the Segway, walk or cycle.
