Riding on Dartmoor
A busy few days here at Moorparks. The Hawk Walk yesterday, then horse riding on Dartmoor and a trip to Dingles will finish the week. Some guests who were visiting us recently asked me where they could go horse riding in the countryside. After many phone calls I found Cholwell Riding Stables on Dartmoor ( about 45 min drive). Cholwell were able to book our guests in for the next day. Our guests, who have riden before loved their time there so we decided we should try it also.
Between the four of us there is a mix of riding ability and knowlede of horses. Kayleigh has riden before a few times, Michele has riden once before. I have seen a horse and Scott has eaten horse 😉 (not a whole one).
The stables are right on Dartmoor so this is a great thing to do in the morning, then carry on exploring after lunch in one of the local pubs.

I’m a cowboy now!
Once we had been fitted up with our hard hats and boots we were given our horses, I think mine was called Flash or Bullet but can’t quite remember. We mounted our horses using the mounting blocks rather than the run and jump method, bit of a relief really. As Kayleigh had previous experience on a horse she was left to carry on herself whist the rest of use had someone holding the reins. Donna was holding the reins for Scotts and my horse, she explained how to start/stop and turn. During the ride on Dartmoor we learned about the horses and the moors. There was some fantastic scenery. On a few occasions we did break into a trot, which for those of you without our vast riding skills is slightly more painful than a walk. The trip out was about an hour long and towards the end Donna had enough of us and let go of the reins. An hour doesn’t sound long but if you haven’t done it before, it’s plenty! We had a great time, the staff were great as were the horses. They can cater for any ability as has been proved. I hope you get the chance to try it out when you visit us.
